Concept

We looked at 11 competitors, both VR and Mobile meditation apps to learn what is done well and what's not

We studied both VR and mobile meditation apps to capture the full spectrum, while aligning our criteria with evidence‑based mental health practices (e.g. mood‑based personalization, micro‑sessions, and habit scaffolding). This dual‑lens approach ensures we identify where presence and immersion meet proven mindfulness techniques.

Our key takeaways from examining 11 competitors:

VR Apps

Immersion and sense of presence

Impactful spatial audio + guided environments

Weak on habit-building

Mobile Apps

Easy access with micro-sessions that fit daily life

Strong habit scaffolding

Lack the immersive “escape”

Inital flow and wireframes

Mapping out how the story could unfold.

I started by sketching simple wireframes and drafting an interaction flow. The goal was to make the experience feel intuitive: onboarding, roaming the space, discovering diary pages, and unlocking new scenes. Early flows leaned too linear, which helped me see where I needed more flexibility for exploration.

Design Inspo

Something dreamlike, comforting, yet playful.

We were aiming for a light, “cloudy” visual language—soft edges, airy negative space, and gentle inner/outer shadows that feel floaty rather than heavy.

Challenges

Collaboratively working in Unity was more challenging than anticipated.

As UX/UI designers, we are used to the Figma workflow, but Unity was a lot more difficult to collaborate with. Therefore our team decided to proceed with these steps, to ensure that everyone is contributing to the project equally:

Collaboratively working in Unity was more challenging than anticipated.

As UX/UI designers, we are used to the Figma workflow, but Unity was a lot more difficult to collaborate with. Therefore our team decided to proceed with these steps, to ensure that everyone is contributing to the project equally:

Each person is in charge of one environment

Bi-weekly meetings to give each other updates

Notifying the team when any changes were pushed

However, after the initial round of presentations, we clearly saw that there is a disconnect between our environments.

Design System

To tackle the stylistic differences, we created a design system to keep things consistant.

From type to color to icons, we translated the airy visual language into a system we could actually design with. Building this toolkit was where the concept shifted from mood to something tangible—guiding every screen that followed.

How do you feel about the scene?
What type of sounds, texture, colors evoke those feelings?

What would you want to see in this experience
Overall, users responded positively to the experience:

Felt Playful and Engaging

Users described the scene as lighthearted and fun, which encouraged exploration.

Plenty of Interactions

Participants noted there was enough variety in actions and visuals to keep them engaged.

Created a Calming Mood

The combination of colors, sounds, and pacing gave the experience a relaxing, soothing vibe.

That said, a few areas still had room for improvement:

1/ Inconsistent UI and Environment creating disjointed feeling

Created a simple typography kit and color palette that was used across to create a more cohesive continuous experience

2/ Wanted more freedom in setting up the scene to be able to customize and personalize the experience.

Users are able to change the type of music that they want to listen to upon entering the scene.

3/ Participants stated that the generic responses felt impersonal and broke the sense of continuity, leading them to disengage rather than feel supported.

Integrated AI to have a more personalized conversation but also recall and reference users’ past emotional states

4/ Initial user tests had a key takeaway of ‘Habit-forming features that understands their schedule’. We felt it still wasn’t being achieved in any way with the experiences built

VR is challenging but rewarding

New challenges made progress slow, but the payoff was worth it.

Rules make the world believable

Clear boundaries kept the meditation space coherent.

Testing matters even more in VR

Frequent checks caught small issues before they broke immersion.
